What is Sex Therapy?
Many of us struggle with the wish to be close to a lover/ partner/spouse while simultaneously feeling fearful of risking vulnerability. We may long to discover ways to experience deeper intimacy, yet feel unsure as to how to go about it. Past hurts, traumas in childhood or adolescence, negative family messages about sexuality, body image issues, present-day stresses, health difficulties, betrayals of trust, and experiences of loss, may all contribute to this hesitancy.
At times, individual and/or relationship problems can manifest as sexual difficulties. Sex therapy can provide a forum for an exploration of high, low, or absent desire, difficulties with pain, arousal, orgasm and/or erectile functioning, and out-of-control sexual behaviours. In therapy you will have an opportunity to make sense of the ways in which you may avoid intimacy with your partner and a chance to develop a better understanding of what prevents you from experiencing the type of deeper physical and emotional intimacy you desire. In both individual and couple therapy you will learn to talk about your deepest needs and desires in a clear, kind and straightforward manner.
Healing past wounds in a safe therapeutic setting is the first step in the development of greater self-confidence and assertiveness. Working through these issues and learning new ways to communicate and interact more directly can help lead you out of a place of disconnection and alienation and into a more authentic sense of connection with yourself and each other.
